K-Mart's Example

I remember several years ago a big boycott against K-Mart by Christian consumers led by the AFA (The American Family Association). The boycott was because K-mart was one of the leading distributors of pornography through its Waldenbooks bookstores. It was so successful that in 1995, when Floyd Hall was appointed chairman and chief executive officer of K-Mart, he wrote AFA President Donald E. Wildmon a personal letter, saying he had directed K-Mart to get out of the porn business.
This is what keeps customer service up and prices down. If I can get a certain good a little cheaper down the road why then would I spend more to get it? This is what happened to the auto industry. The cost of producing a car in the U.S.A. was driven up. Unions are milking the car companies and the autoworkers dry and no one is doing anything about it. Unions have their place in business but when the companies allow unions to drive up the price of their products to the point that they can no longer compete something must change.
The free market has already taken this into account and put into place a means to solve the problem. Economics 101 states that if a business is failing they must change to meet the demands of the consumer. We the consumers demand reasonable competitive prices. They failed to meet these demands. The result was that we, the consumers, went elsewhere for our supply of automobiles. The auto companies have failed and must change. No intelligent person would invest money into a sinking ship without first fixing the hole. That is exactly what former president Bush did and that is what our current president Barrack Obama continues to do. As I've said many times before, to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results is the definition of insanity. Why would you expect these companies treat our money any better than they did their own? If we want these companies to succeed than we must allow them to solve their problems or get out of the way for a company who will do what is necessary to succeed. This is how our economic crisis must begin to correct itself. Jobs lost to failing business will be created in the void that new companies will always fill. New creative entrepreneurs will find ways to make money and that's what will stimulate our economy!

Steven,After you commented on my article, I had to see what you were all about. I agree with you on unions to a degree, they've had too much sway over both private industry and government.I think our disagreement hinges on healthcare being an appropriate commodity to leave to the free market. People's health shouldn't hinge on profit in my opinion, we owe our citizens better than having 47 million uninsured simply so that insurance companies can make billions.Be well! Missing LinkI think our argument lies in that I believe that insurance is a privilege not a right. I work in health care and we deny no one in dire need of lifesaving treatment due to insurance. If you cannot afford your own health care there are already programs in place. Every city has a free heath clinic for those who need vaccination or checkups. Some are based on your income. If you can afford health care you don't need to tie up the services for those less fortunate.
Steven,What do you think about the truth on cancer research? (Meaning, we the drug companies don't make cures they make treatments.) That there is no money in cures. I have personally had to go through two treatments in life (Both test drug). And I still don't think it was the drugs I think is was God because others around me took the same drugs and died and others still had their cancer.First, I want to congratulate you on your recovery and wish you all the health in the world. Working as I do with cancer patients, I see people of all ages afflicted with this horrible sickness, which can only be described as evil. There is no cure yet for cancer, but these drug companies are doing their best to make products to treat in the hope that one day one of these "treatments" will lead to a cure. There is little money in treatments for cancer. What drives up the cost is simply the large amounts of money it takes to fund research into the drugs. They must pay scientist to develop, companies to manufacture, and people to market. This is expensive. I thank God that they eat much of the cost and give these test drugs, usually at no cost to the patient, accepting generally only what the insurance companies will pay. Most of these treatments and test drugs cost tens of thousands of dollars per dose. I have not met anyone who has had to pay full cost of these drugs. Usually the expenses that a patient must pay are to the doctor's office for office visits and lab work. I do agree with you, that it was God who cured you. He is the Great Physician. If God is calling you home there is not a drug in the universe to keep you here. I can't say that I understand his will but I do know that if he has given you the to live after cancer that he has plans for you. Live each day knowing that he loves you and don't waste a moment of your time here on earth. You should know, more than anyone, that life can be swept away in a heartbeat. God bless you
