Facebook! Facebook! FACEBOOK! Everywhere I look all I see is Facebook! It is on the news, in the office, and you can even follow this web site on Facebook. The other day at work these two ladies were talking about giving each other a tree or a fruit bush and a cow and saying that their farms had been neglected for a while. Knowing these ladies not to be the farmer type I asked what in the world they were going on about. They told me it was; you guessed it, Face book! They were appalled that I didn't "facebook". That was it for me. I decided to look into this whole phenomenon and see what I have been missing.
Facebook is a social web site much like My Space. You can join as long as your over 13 years old and have a valid E Mail address. There is the option of adding your address and phone number but you must remember that other people could possibly get to that information. Always use good common since when it comes to posting any personal information on the Internet.
A lot of good things are happening out there because of Facebook. I have heard story after story of people reconnecting with lost friends through Facebook. One story I would like to share happened to my father just a few weeks ago. My father is a 51 year old truck driver. He stays connected to people via his cell phone for the most part. He has a Facebook account. One afternoon, during one of his brief times out of his truck, he decided to take a walk. He turned onto a street and happened to notice the name of the street was the same as his first girlfriend. He told me that he had not thought of this girl much since he was in school. He decided to look her up on Facebook, but when he signed on there was a message from that very girl. It said, "When is the last time you thought about me?" R econnections like this would be nearly impossible without social sites like Facebook.
It's not all good though. I have seen all to many times people become disconnected to the world because of these sights. These on line communities become somewhat addicting and you really do need that face to face interaction with others to really connect.
Facebook seems to really be making a difference in peoples lives; some good some bad. It can be a powerful tool and it is one I fully plan to utilize. I hope it will help me stay in touch with all those who have slipped out of my life.
