How to Eat a Pomegranate

Pomegranates are fast becoming a popular fruit. They have been eaten for centuries but are just recently coming to the attention of many Americans as a health food. They have many benefits, the newest showing that the juice can slow the development of breast cancer. They are high in antioxidants and vitamin c. When you buy one at the local grocery store you may be a bit perplexed exactly what to do with it. It has thick skin and if you break it open is full of little red seeds. Well, those seeds are the fruit. That is the part you eat that has all the nutrition and flavor. I am sure you could do something with the peel but I don’t know what. If you try and eat the fruit you will notice that it has a sort of film holding it all together. The process of removing all the “junk" can be tedious until you learn the proper way of separating it all. This is my method;

1. Pick a good pomegranate
Pick a fruit that is very brightly colored and large. The heavier the better as they have more juice. Make sure the skin does not have any rips or tears. Also the skin should be look taunt and not look withered.

2. Cut off the crown
The crown is the top of the fruit where it connected with the bush. This is where I’ll warn you that pomegranate juice stains so watch where you cut it and try not to get it in you clothes.

3. Slice the skin into wedges
You don’t have to cut deep, just through the skin about every three inches all the way around the fruit.

4. Soak it in a bowl full of water
Let it sit submerged for about 15 minutes

5. Agitated and separate
As you began to agitate the fruit, you will notice that the seeds sink and the rind and other junk floats. Skim the junk off the top and strain the fruit from the water.

6. Enjoy!

The fruit is now ready to eat. You can eat it as is or juice it. There are plenty of recipes out there. Happy eating!
