American Idol, Ellen DeGeneres, The Top 24, and The Death of American Idol

As I have said before, I am a huge American Idol fan. I wrote an article almost condemning the network for taking Ellen DeGeneres on as Paula Abduls replacement. After watching her for the first few episodes I have to let you know that I have been pleasantly surprised thus far. She has added some humor to the show that was missing. Her personality really shines on this show, and although she is not a music expert, her experience in the entertainment industry allows her to give necessary feedback to the contestants. She also adds the opinions that we common folk would give that previous contestants weren't privy to. I think that this "outsider" opinion will give the contestants an added factor to take to future performances and really help them grow as performers. The only real criticism I have for Ellen so far is that she seems scared up there giving advice. Listen to me Ellen! It is okay to tell them that they didn't do a good job. If you don't give honest opinions of their performances, how will they make it better next time? If you truly give honest feedback, even negative, it makes the joy that comes from positive feedback that much more special.

That brings me to the next point of topic, this year's contestants. This past Tuesday and Wednesday I watched as contestant after contestant murdered song after song. With the exception of rare rays of sunshine like Lilly Scott singing Fixing A Hole' by The Beatles andwell, that was just about it, I think we may have the least talented group called the top 24 in the history of the show! If they don't start showing something in the next few weeks I may have to do something I haven't done before and tune into something else until it gets closer to the finale. I think I would be better off trying to catch the highlights of each week on Youtube. After the four hours of terrible singing this week I feel as if I have wasted a big part of my week.

It is time for Idol to really step it up. Paula is gone and Simon is leaving after this season. Fans are tuning out more and more everyday. I worry that I am watching the death of one of my favorite shows.
