Rocky Horror Picture Show, "I Don't Get It!" What Is that Homosexual Movie Really About?

Halloween is passed. Now, it is on to the big holidays, but I want to pause for a moment and tell you about a Halloween tradition that I have. It’s one that I am sure you all have seen or heard of and formed an opinion about one-way or the other. It is The Rocky Horror Picture Show to which I refer. I always try and go some time around this time of the year. It has become a tradition to many people.
Rocky Horror is not about homosexuality, as some would suggest. It is not about rebellion. It is not about some great music or even “Doing the Time Warp Again" It has a little to do with all these things but Rocky Horror stands for something much deeper and much more personal. Rocky Horror Picture Show is a place to go where it doesn’t matter if you are old or young, fat or skinny, cool or a nerd. You belong. It is a home to all because there, no one is an outsider and no one is a reject. If you go to a show and feel like you don’t belong it is because you judge these people to be different. This is a place of fun and letting go, and if you can’t do that then you will never understand what Rocky Horror is all about.
Dress up when you go!!! Why? Because it is a fun way to express yourself! You will see any number of outfits when you go. You may see some dressed up as characters from the movie. You may see some in sexy lingerie. You may see me in a red velvet dress with a black feather boa! Find a way to express who you are and show it! I usually dress in “drag" to go. I do this not because it is attractive or I secretly want to be a woman but because I want to escape all my inhibitions and society placed shackles of conformity. It gives me a freedom to enjoy the show in an entirely different way. If you feel a connection with one of the characters you can dress like them. For example Eddie is a person who has been pieced together and has been changed into a Frankenstein-like person to please someone that offered love to him if he changed only to be spurned and eventually killed by his love when a “better model" came along. I know a few people who can relate. If you are one of them, dress as Eddie if it suits your desires.
I guess what I really want to get across in this article s to explain that Rocky Horror Picture Show, like many things, is not what it first appears. Try to see it through some new eyes. You will be amazed at what you can experience when you drop the act of being what others feel you should be for just a few hours. Am I suggesting you turn you back on reality and such? Absolutely not!!! I just saying try to let go of all your worries for a little while, cast off your cares about appearances and every once in a while allow yourself to really have fun. But most importantly, learn not to judge people for doing something strange to you. Don’t assume you know anything about another person (even your own family) because they may act differently then you. Judgment should be left to God alone.
I leave you know with a quote from one of my favorite Rocky Horror songs.
“Smile, and that will mean I may
'Cause I've seen blue skies
Through the tears in my eyes
And I realize I'm going home
